- Richard Morgan is a pioneer in the art of male nude image making. His career spans from the late Sixties, when such work was considered obscene and illegal, until today. At the height of his career his images captured a rare moment of sexual exuberance in a time before sex carried the threat of chronic illness. His images, once part of explicit sex films are now fine art snapshots of a hedonistic oasis in the history of the male erotica.
Richard Morgan was born near Boston, Massachusetts in 1946. His family moved Southern California in 1956. There he majored in Metallurgy with an interest in spacecraft design at a special all boys private parochial high school in Los Angeles area. He graduated high school at age 16. Soon after he went from taking X-rays of metal parts to photographing naked young surfers in Newport Beach, California. Even in his youth in the early Sixties he identified as gay, and even though attitudes in California were becoming more tolerant, he experienced the prejudices that come with being openly homosexual. He was rejected by the Selective Service (U.S. Military) in 1966 for that reason. In 1968 Morgan began taking classes in motion picture production and photographing nudes of his young male buddies and selling their pictures to magazine publishers. In 1969 at age 22 had his first all male nude magazine published all of his work by legend publisher, Bob Damron. His successes lead to a luxurious lifestyle that is best described as "sex, drugs and rock & roll".
His early forays into the all-male adult erotica business continued to expand and push boundaries. It is important to note that at the time, in 1970, explicit male erotica was considered obscene. Morgan was one of the first to offer explicit 8mm films, both gay & straight, by mail-order. He worked with another pioneering erotic film-maker, "Jay Brian" and started a famous San Francisco brothel, the Jay Brian Agency, in 1969. His mail-order business, which featured full color hardcore brochures offered explicit male erotic films throughout the United States. This lead to a 14 count Federal obscenity Indictment. Undeterred by his on going court case, he started Griffin/Magnum International in San Francisco- another mail-order business that featured young men having sex. His Costly Federal Court case ended with being placed on probation for 2 years.
In the later half of the Seventies through the Mid-Eighties Morgan went on to work with many of the best known players in the male erotic industry at that time. The industry itself outgrew it's multiple creators and became a global enterprise worth billions. Due to a number of tragic happenings in Richard's personal and business life,including a new set of Federal Indictments regarding the definition of obscene materials, he decided to lead a simpler lifestyle.
His work in the male erotic industry has been reduced to a minimum. While his more recent projects are less frequent, he enjoys their success and the study of fine art photography.
